Breathing Pattern Disorder (BPD) can develop when your breathing becomes inefficient or unbalanced, causing breathlessness, chest tightness and heaviness, a sensation of not being able to take a big enough breath — often when you’re at rest rather than exercising.
It can be linked to body shape, illness, stress, or certain sports and activities, and can affect people of all ages. Specialist physiotherapy assessment helps identify and treat the underlying causes.
Typical symptoms include breathing too deeply or too fast, breathing through your mouth, and overusing your shoulders — especially when these patterns don’t match your activity level.
Breathing Retraining Techniques can help you quickly regain control of your breathing, reduce symptoms, and improve comfort. (This is not the same as breathwork.)
